instructions for DIY ornaments
what you will need?
hanging:
If you would like to hang the ornament, you will have to include a thread, ribbon, leather cord.... You will need a length of about 10 inch (25cm). You could also make a really long loop to hang them in a window frame....
hem allowances:
All of the large and medium size shapes have a hem allowance of 3/8 inch (1cm).
The small ones only have 1/8 inch (3 mm) for the hem.
the filling:
You can fill it to the rim and make it bulge. Or you could fill it just to take shape but it is still soft to touch.
Start by carefully cutting out the shapes along the edge. If you would like to embroider, embellish ... now is the time!
option 1
sew inside out and then finish by hand stitching
- fat quarter of a 56 inch wide fabric of my ornament collection from Spoonflower( I recommend the organic cotton sateen ultra - the colours are great, it has a little sheen and it is beautiful fabric to work with)
- old cushion for filling material
- thread in matching or contrasting colours
- scissors
- hand sewing needles
- sewing machine
- embroidery thread, beads, embellishments, bells, pompoms...
- thread for hanging

- Lay the two shapes that you would like to sew together with their right sides onto each other.
- Cut a ribbon or thread of about 10 inch length and knot the ends together. (If it's a wider ribbon you won't need the knot as the sewing will Arrange the hanging ribbon in between the two layers and secure with two or three needles to keep in place. Arrange the ribbon in a way that about 1/2 inch sticks out over the edge of the shape at the top, from where you would like to hang it. The rest of the ribbon will have to hide in between the two pieces of fabrics away from the edge so you don't sew over by accident.
- With your sewing machine or by hand sew around the edge with a 3/8 inch hem (please see note above for hem allowances of the different sizes) and leaving a gap at the end of about 1 1/2 to 2 inches to fill the decoration.
- Turn the fabric inside out so the right side is now on the outside.
- Fill the ornament and secure the gap with 2 or 3 needles and then blind stitch together. Done!
option 2

- Lay the two shapes with the left sides against each other (so the printed sides are on the outside). Make sure the printed sides match i.e. leaves are facing both up.
- Secure the two fabrics with some needles.
- Take a ca 10 inch long thread/ribbon and knot towards the end. Secure it in between the layers of the fabric so that the know is going to be on the inside of the ornament once it is finished.
- Sew around the shape leaving a gap at the end of about 1 1/2 inch to fill the ornament.
- Fill the ornament and finish sewing the last bit to close it.
- If you would like to fill the ornament very firmly, you might have to finish it by hand, as you might find it tricky to sew close to the filling - I did it with the zipper foot to get close to the edge.
- With zig zag scissors cut around the ornament being careful not to cut of the thread.
Enjoy your little fabric ornaments!
